WHAT IS ASTROLOGY?

The beginnings of astrology are lost in ancient history, but it seems to have evolved in the same way as many philosophies and belief systems. Its roots can be traced back to ancient civilisations and there are signs that forms of it existed in prehistoric times.

I find it interesting to wonder why Asian astrology developed along quite practical and fatalistic lines whereas European astrology evolved using a more psychological approach, possibly due to the influence of the great Greek philosophers.

The Greeks were captivated by the ever-changing cycles of the movement of the planets as they travelled around the solar system. They felt that the planetary patterns were a form of art and compared their rhythms to those found in music.

When people ask me “why do astrologers associate a particular meaning to a sign or planet?” I can only answer “why do we connect a particular colour with the word blue, or green, or yellow?”

Some people say it’s a science, others describe it as an art, but I always think of astrology as a language. For me, it’s a form of cosmic communication.

In my experience astrology is never wrong - it’s just astrologers who get it wrong. The challenge of coping with so much detailed information and then interpreting it in exactly the right sequence at precisely the right level is difficult to say the least.

To be an astrologer is to accept that you will never stop learning!

This website aims to help you take the first steps to understanding what astrology is and how it works.

Although it looks complicated, the basic building blocks of birth chart reading are really quite simple.

We start by breaking the birth chart down into its individual parts.  The BBB (basic building blocks) of astrology are:

• The Zodiac Signs
• The Planets
• The Planetary Patterns (or Aspects)
• The Horoscope Houses

Going into more detail covers:

• Controlling (or Ruling) Planets
• Zodiac Elements & Qualities

Putting all the information together (called synthesis) is more difficult. It takes practice to become fluent in the language of astrology. The best practice is to read as many charts as you can.
